Status update: Notion no longer sells a stand-alone Notion AI add-on to new customers; since May 2025 AI is included in the Business and Enterprise plans, with only a limited trial on Free and Plus.
Notion AI is the set of AI features built into Notion, the docs, wiki and database workspace many startups and engineering teams already use. If you remember Notion AI as a $10 add-on you could bolt onto any plan, that is no longer how it is sold. Since May 2025, Notion has bundled AI into its Business and Enterprise plans. Free and Plus workspaces get only a limited trial. The real question is no longer “is the add-on worth it?” but “is it worth moving to the Business plan to get AI?”
This review is for developers, technical founders and team leads who already keep specs, runbooks or project trackers in Notion, or are considering it. It covers what Notion AI does in October 2026, including Notion Agent, Custom Agents, Enterprise Search and AI Meeting Notes. It also covers how the usage allowance and Notion credits work, and where the limits are. For the wider landscape, see our roundup of AI productivity tools for tech teams.

Quick verdict
In our assessment, for teams that already live in Notion, the Business plan’s AI is a strong upgrade. Notion Agent can read and edit your pages and databases, and search Slack, Google Drive and GitHub through connectors, with your existing permissions respected. The catch is cost and metering. AI requires Business at $20 per member per month billed annually ($24 monthly), double the Plus price. Heavy use runs into a six-hour and monthly usage allowance. Premium models, Custom Agents and Workers cost extra through Notion credits. If you only want an AI writing assistant, a general assistant subscription is likely cheaper.
- Pro: AI works directly on your workspace, with permission-aware answers that cite your pages and connected apps.
- Pro: Notion Agent can create and edit pages and databases, not just draft text.
- Pro: A choice of models from several providers, including GPT-6.1 Sol, Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5 as of October 2026.
- Pro: Clear data terms. Notion says customer data is not used for training by default, and Enterprise gets zero data retention with LLM providers for most models.
- Con: No AI add-on any more. Free and Plus get only a limited number of complimentary AI responses.
- Con: Usage is metered in six-hour and monthly windows, and Notion does not publish the exact allowance.
- Con: Custom Agents, Workers and premium models need Notion credits ($10 per 1,000 monthly credits) on top of seat fees.
- Con: Several headline features, including Enterprise Search, Research Mode and image generation, are still labelled beta.
What is Notion AI?
Notion AI is not a separate app. It lives inside Notion pages, databases and the Notion Agent chat panel, and it uses your workspace as context. Notion describes it as a “built-in teammate”: you can ask it to draft or edit a page, build a database, fill in properties, summarise a project or answer questions from your docs and connected tools.
How Notion AI is packaged changed in May 2025, when Notion launched “Notion AI for Work”. Notion moved AI into the Business and Enterprise plans and raised those plans’ prices. Existing customers’ new prices took effect at their first renewal after August 13, 2025. Today Notion’s help center says plainly: “Notion AI is available on Business and Enterprise Plans.” Users on Free and Plus “get a limited number of complimentary AI responses so they can try Notion AI features out.” Once those responses are used up, an upgrade to Business or Enterprise is required.
Under the hood, Notion runs a mix of models from several providers. It indexes your pages as embeddings, generated using zero-retention LLMs according to Notion, so it can find relevant pages before the model writes an answer. Notion’s security documentation says answers only ever use content the requesting user already has access to.
Key features
Notion Agent
Notion Agent is the personal AI chat in your sidebar. It can take on multi-step tasks using context from your workspace, connected apps and the web, then create or edit pages, databases and charts on your behalf. You can give it instructions and reusable “skills”, and since Notion 3.7 (September 2026) teams can share skills from a workspace library. Notion says the agent can also read uploaded files and produce downloadable outputs such as spreadsheets, PDFs or slide decks.
Custom Agents and Workers
Custom Agents run recurring work autonomously, for example answering questions in Slack, routing tasks or posting project updates. Workers (beta) let developers extend agents with custom code, sync external data and trigger Notion workflows. Both require Notion credits.
Enterprise Search and AI Connectors
Enterprise Search (beta) finds answers across your workspace and connected tools such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, GitHub and Google Drive. Notion lists Jira, Box, OneDrive, Salesforce and Asana connectors as beta. Research Mode, also in beta, produces longer reports from your workspace, connectors and the web.
AI Meeting Notes
AI Meeting Notes transcribes and summarises meetings without a bot joining the call, and keeps the notes searchable in Notion. Notion’s help center still calls it beta in places, and it has its own cap of 10 hours a day, separate from the general usage allowance. If meeting capture is your main need, our comparison of dedicated AI meeting assistants is a better starting point.
Model choice, MCP and external agents
Notion 3.8 (October 13, 2026) added seven models, including GPT-6.1 Sol, GPT-6 Luna, Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5. It also added MCP connections to more than 150 tools and admin controls over which external AI tools can connect to the workspace. It added an option for Business and Enterprise members with a ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Go account to use that plan for GPT models inside Notion Agent, though not inside Custom Agents. Notion says it adds no markup.
AI in pages and databases
The original Notion AI features remain: inline writing help, AI blocks that generate or refresh content, page translation, database autofill and formula writing. Image generation is available on Business and Enterprise, in beta, with limits of 10 images per 24 hours and 30 per 30 days per user.
Who should use Notion AI
Notion AI makes most sense for teams whose specs, decisions, runbooks and project trackers already live in Notion. The value comes from context: an agent that can find last quarter’s design doc, check it against a Jira or GitHub sync and draft an update in your team’s format. It is also a reasonable fit for small companies that want one tool for wiki, light project management and AI search, and are comfortable with Business-plan pricing. For how Notion compares with dedicated trackers, see our project management guide for software teams.
Who should skip Notion AI
Skip it if your team does not use Notion as its main knowledge base. Notion AI’s strength is your Notion content, and it is not a cheap general chatbot. Skip it too if you are on Plus and only want occasional drafting help: moving a five-person team from Plus to Business adds $50 a month on annual billing. A general assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, compared in our ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini guide, may cover that need for less. Individuals who want local-first, private notes will be better served by the tools in our AI note-taking apps roundup.
Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Workspace-aware and permission-aware. Answers draw on pages and connected tools the user can already see, and Notion says the AI “never widens your access.”
- Acts, not just writes. Notion Agent and Custom Agents create and update pages and databases, which goes beyond a chat sidebar.
- Model flexibility. Notion describes itself as model agnostic and lets admins choose which models a team can use.
- Clear data terms. Notion says neither Notion nor its AI providers train on customer data by default, providers retain data for 30 days or fewer on non-Enterprise plans, and Enterprise gets zero data retention for most models (Notion says the few models without it are off by default) and, per Notion, can support HIPAA-compliant workflows. Notion AI is in scope for Notion’s SOC 2 Type 2 report and ISO 27001 certification.
Limitations
- Plan lock-in for AI. With no stand-alone add-on, the minimum price for real Notion AI use is the Business plan, for every member.
- Opaque allowance. Business and Enterprise include a usage allowance measured over a six-hour window and a monthly billing window. Notion explains how it works, but its pricing and help pages do not state the size of the allowance. When it runs out, features pause until the window resets, unless an admin lets members spend Notion credits.
- Extra spend for automation. Custom Agents, Workers and premium models always spend Notion credits. Monthly credits cost $10 per 1,000 and do not roll over. Annual credits cost $13 per 1,000 and expire at renewal.
- Beta features. Enterprise Search, Research Mode, image generation, Workers and parts of AI Meeting Notes are labelled beta.
- Enterprise-only controls. SCIM, audit logs, DLP and SIEM connections, and zero data retention with LLM providers are Enterprise features. Business gets SAML SSO.
Pricing (as of October 2026)
| Plan | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Core Notion. A limited trial of Notion AI (complimentary responses only). |
| Plus | $10/member/month billed annually; $12 billed monthly | Unlimited blocks and file uploads, basic connections. AI is still a limited trial. |
| Business | $20/member/month billed annually; $24 billed monthly | Notion AI with a usage allowance: Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search (beta), Research Mode (beta). Also SAML SSO, private teamspaces and premium connections. |
| Enterprise | Custom (contact sales) | Everything in Business, plus zero data retention with LLM providers, SCIM, audit log, advanced security controls and DLP/SIEM connections. |
| Notion credits (Business and Enterprise only) | $10 per 1,000 credits monthly; $13 per 1,000 annually | Pays for Custom Agents, Workers, premium AI models and AI use beyond the allowance. |
Prices are listed in USD, per member, and exclude tax. Guests are free. Notion says plans “may not be available for every workspace.” The Plus plan is free for students and educators with a one-member limit, but that does not unlock Notion AI. Notion offers a 30-day Business trial for eligible teams on a professional email domain. If you entered payment details, the trial continues automatically as a paid Business plan unless you cancel before it ends. See Notion pricing

Use cases
Engineering knowledge base Q&A
Ask Notion Agent where a service’s runbook lives, what was decided in an architecture review, or which open incidents mention a component. Answers cite the source pages, and connected apps widen the search.
Recurring status reporting
A Custom Agent can compile weekly updates from a project database and post them to Slack. This uses Notion credits, so estimate volume before you roll it out across teams.
Spec and doc drafting
Turn meeting notes or a brainstorm page into a structured spec, then use shared skills to apply your team’s template and review checklist.
Alternatives
- ClickUp: project management with docs and its own AI layer, ClickUp Brain. A closer fit if task tracking matters more than a wiki.
- ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini: general assistants with their own connectors. Often cheaper if you do not need AI inside Notion itself.
- Obsidian, Mem, Capacities and other note apps: better suited to personal knowledge management, local-first storage or lower individual prices.
Final verdict
Notion AI in 2026 is a capable, workspace-aware assistant and agent platform, but it is sold as part of Notion’s Business plan, not as a cheap add-on. If your team already runs on Notion and will use Notion Agent, search and meeting notes most days, the Business upgrade is easy to justify. If you mainly want a writing helper, or your knowledge lives elsewhere, the Plus-to-Business jump and the credit-metered agents are hard to justify. Use the Business trial to check whether the usage allowance holds up for your heaviest users before you commit to annual billing. Try Notion
FAQ
Can I still buy the Notion AI add-on?
Not as a new customer. Notion’s pricing and help pages now present Notion AI as part of the Business and Enterprise plans, with only a limited trial on Free and Plus. Notion said in 2025 that workspaces already on Business or Enterprise with the old add-on would get the new AI features.
Does Notion train AI models on my workspace?
Notion says that by default neither Notion nor its AI providers use customer data to train models, and its contracts prohibit providers from doing so. Workspace owners can choose to share data to help improve Notion AI in settings.
What happens when we hit the usage limit?
Features covered by the allowance pause until the six-hour window resets, or until the next billing cycle if you used the monthly allowance. Admins can let members keep going by spending Notion credits.
