Perplexity is an AI answer engine. You ask a question, it searches the web (and, on paid plans, your files and connected apps), and it writes an answer with inline citations you can click to check. For developers and technical teams, that makes it useful for research: comparing libraries, tracking down an error message, reading up on an API change or building a quick market scan, with sources attached. In 2026 Perplexity has grown well beyond search. It now offers Perplexity Computer, an agent that does multi-step work on credits, and Comet, its AI browser.
This review is for developers and small teams deciding whether Perplexity Pro, Max or Enterprise is worth paying for alongside, or instead of, a general assistant. It is part of our guide to AI productivity tools for developers. If you are weighing Perplexity against ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, read our comparison of the three main AI assistants too.
This is an editorial research review based on Perplexity’s pricing page, help center, changelog and privacy documentation, plus public reporting on its legal disputes, all checked on October 17, 2026. We did not run our own accuracy tests or benchmarks.
Quick verdict
In our assessment, Perplexity remains a practical tool for cited research. Every answer shows its sources, and paid plans let you choose among models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others in one subscription. Pro, at $17 a month billed annually, is the sensible entry point (the current pricing page does not show a monthly price). Max ($200 a month) and the credit-based Computer agent are for heavy users, and their costs need watching. The main caveats are that citations are only as good as the pages behind them, so you still need to check them; that consumer accounts are used for AI training unless you opt out; and that Perplexity faces several publisher copyright lawsuits.
- Pro: Inline citations on every answer make claims quick to verify.
- Pro: One subscription covers models from several vendors, with a preferred-model setting on Pro and Max.
- Pro: Strong enterprise data terms: Perplexity says Enterprise data is never used for training, and uploaded files are deleted after seven days.
- Pro: Computer, Deep Research, connectors and Comet go well beyond basic Q&A.
- Con: AI Data Retention, which allows training on your data, is on by default for Free, Pro and Max users.
- Con: Computer runs on credits (100 credits = $1), and large tasks can use thousands of credits.
- Con: Pending copyright suits from publishers including The New York Times and News Corp.
- Con: Some help center pages lag the product, for example by listing older model versions.
What is Perplexity?
Perplexity started as a “search with citations” product and still works that way at its core. Its pricing FAQ says Perplexity “orchestrates multiple top models and selects the best one per query, including ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude, and NVIDIA Nemotron”. It also has its own in-house Sonar models. The changelog shows how quickly new models arrive: GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Opus 5.5 were added on October 5, 2026, after GPT-6 Astra in September and Grok 4.6 in August.
Around search, Perplexity has built a broader product family. Computer is an agent for multi-step tasks such as research reports, dashboards and small web apps. In 2026 it gained memory (called Brain), automations, an effort-level setting, shared Projects and a Windows desktop app. Comet is Perplexity’s browser for Mac, Windows, iOS and Android, with an assistant that can act on web pages. An API platform, billed separately, serves developers.
Key features
Cited answers and search modes
Perplexity’s help center describes several search modes: a default “Best” mode that picks a model automatically, Pro Search for multi-step questions, Reasoning Search and Research mode, which produces long reports. Pro subscribers get “10x as many citations per answer” compared with Free, according to Perplexity. Because citations are links, you can open the source and confirm a version number or API detail yourself. In our assessment, this verification step is what makes Perplexity well suited to technical questions.
Model choice
Pro and Max let you select a preferred model per query, and Max adds Perplexity’s most advanced reasoning models. Perplexity notes that access to advanced models “may be limited during weeks of especially heavy usage.”
Files, Projects and connectors
Paid plans raise file-upload limits, and Pro allows up to 50 files per project. You can search across the web, your files and connected apps. Perplexity’s pricing page lists more than 400 app connectors, plus premium data sources such as PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ on Pro and Max.
Perplexity Computer and credits
Computer handles multi-step work and is billed in credits. Perplexity’s credits article says “100 credits equals $1”. It gives typical ranges of 15–70 credits for a quick fact, 350–950 for a multi-step research report, 2,400–9,800 for a data dashboard and 15,000 or more for an entire app. Paid consumer Pro plans include some Computer usage each week, which resets weekly and does not roll over, plus a one-time bonus of 4,000 credits. Max includes 10,000 credits a month.
Comet browser
Comet combines a browser with an assistant that can summarise pages, draft emails and complete tasks such as shopping. Max subscribers get “Max Assistant”, which uses more advanced reasoning models, and the highest weekly limit on browser-agent queries.
Who should use Perplexity
Perplexity fits developers and analysts who research often and want to see where an answer came from: library comparisons, changelog and deprecation checks, vendor research, or reading up on an unfamiliar domain. It also suits teams that want access to several frontier models without paying for several subscriptions. Writers of technical content can use it as a sourcing step before drafting, as we discuss in our roundup of AI writing tools for technical documentation.
Who should skip Perplexity
Skip it if you mainly need an assistant for coding, long-document editing or work inside your company’s own tools. A general assistant or a coding agent will usually fit better. Organisations with strict content-licensing policies may want to wait for the publisher lawsuits to resolve. Anyone who needs predictable monthly costs should be careful with heavy Computer use, because credits are consumed per task.
Strengths and limitations
Strengths
- Verifiability. Inline citations on every answer make Perplexity easier to fact-check than an assistant that answers from model memory.
- Multi-model access. One Pro subscription covers models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, xAI and others, plus Sonar.
- Clear enterprise data handling. Perplexity says Enterprise query data is never used for training, uploaded files are kept for only seven days, and third-party model providers are bound by zero-data-retention and no-training agreements. Organisations with 50 or more Enterprise Pro seats, or at least one Enterprise Max seat, can set custom retention periods.
- Fast product pace. The changelog shows major releases every few weeks: automations, role-based access controls, Model Council mode and Deep Research in Computer.
Limitations
- Citations still need checking. A cited answer can still misread or misrepresent its source. The New York Times’ lawsuit alleges, among other things, that Perplexity attributed made-up responses to the Times.
- Default training on consumer plans. Perplexity’s help center says AI Data Retention is “enabled by default” for Free, Pro and Max users. Opting out applies only to data collected afterwards, and “previously collected training data cannot be deleted or removed.”
- Legal uncertainty. The New York Times sued Perplexity for copyright infringement in December 2025, and Axios reported that News Corp, the Wall Street Journal’s parent, had sued earlier that year. In a separate case, Amazon won a preliminary injunction against Comet’s shopping agent, which the Ninth Circuit lifted on August 4, 2026, as MediaPost reported.
- Variable agent costs. Computer tasks are priced by complexity, and Perplexity calls its credit ranges “examples, not guarantees.”
- Documentation lag. Some help center pages still name earlier models, such as GPT-5.2 and Claude Sonnet 4.6, while the changelog lists newer ones. Check the in-app model picker for what you actually get.

Prices are in USD. The $20 monthly Pro price is the figure Perplexity gave when it launched Max; the current pricing page shows only the annual-billing price for Pro. Promotions and local-currency pricing vary by region. New-subscriber bonus credits expire after about 30 days. API usage is not included in any plan. Enterprise has no self-serve trial, and invoice billing is available only on annual subscriptions. See Perplexity pricing

Use cases
Debugging and dependency research
Paste an error message or ask how a library’s API changed between versions. The citations point to issues, docs and release notes you can check before changing code.
Vendor and tool evaluation
Research mode or Computer can compile a comparison of tools, pricing and features. Treat the output as a first draft and verify prices on vendor pages.
Background reading before writing
Collect sources for a design doc, blog post or README section, then draft in your editor or assistant of choice.
Alternatives
- ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini: general assistants that also search the web, with stronger coding agents and office integrations.
- Raycast AI: a launcher (Mac, with Windows and iOS apps) whose Pro plan adds an AI agent, Quick AI and a choice of dozens of models, including Perplexity’s Sonar models. Useful for fast questions without opening a browser.
Final verdict
Perplexity Pro is a well-priced research tool for technical work, as long as you treat its citations as leads to check rather than final answers. Turn off AI Data Retention if you use a consumer account for work, or use Enterprise Pro for team data. Be cautious with Max and Computer until you know how many credits your tasks really use. If cited research is a weekly habit rather than a daily one, the Free plan plus a general assistant may be enough. Try Perplexity
FAQ
Does Perplexity train on my searches?
On Free, Pro and Max, yes by default. You can turn off AI Data Retention under Account settings, then Preferences, and Incognito searches are not stored. Enterprise data is never used for training, according to Perplexity.
Is Perplexity Pro the same as Perplexity’s API?
No. The API platform is billed separately on usage. Neither Pro nor the Enterprise plans include API credits.
What is the difference between Pro and Max?
Max costs ten times as much and adds the highest model access, 10,000 monthly Computer credits, Brain memory in Computer, Max Assistant in Comet and priority support. Perplexity’s FAQ describes Max as “built for heavy, sustained work”. In our assessment, Pro covers most individual research use.
