Status update: On August 18, 2026 Hostinger merged its Website Builder and Horizons into Hostinger AI Builder (the drag-and-drop editor is now Manual mode); Wix added the Wix Harmony editor in January 2026.

Most “best website builder” lists rank tools by how they feel to use. Developers and technical founders usually care about different things: how much of the SEO you can actually control, which performance work the platform does for you, how far you can extend the site with code, and how hard it is to leave. This guide compares the main options on those terms: Webflow, Framer, Wix, Squarespace, Hostinger AI Builder (formerly Hostinger Website Builder) and WordPress, both self-hosted and on WordPress.com.

It is written for people choosing a platform for a marketing site, blog, portfolio or small store, for themselves or for a client. The working title of this piece promised a speed comparison. We changed it, because we compare the performance features each vendor documents, such as CDNs and image optimization, rather than measured page speed.

This is an editorial research article. Everything here comes from the vendors’ official pricing pages, help centers and documentation, checked on October 17, 2026. We did not run our own benchmarks or speed tests, and we do not rank the builders by score.

Quick picks

  • Webflow — best for designers and developers who want a visual CMS with detailed SEO settings and the option to export static code.
  • Framer — best for design-led marketing sites and portfolios where speed of iteration and AI assistance matter.
  • Wix — best for small businesses that want a free start, broad business apps and a long list of editable SEO settings.
  • Squarespace — best for polished, low-maintenance sites and stores where sensible automatic defaults beat fine control.
  • Hostinger AI Builder — best for the lowest advertised monthly price with hosting, domain and email bundled, if you accept a long prepaid term.
  • WordPress — best when ownership, portability and a large plugin ecosystem matter more than convenience.

How we chose

This is a research comparison, not lab testing. We looked at six products that cover the main approaches (design-first builders, small-business builders, a budget hosting bundle and open-source CMS) and compared four things from their own documentation:

  • SEO controls: meta tags, sitemaps, robots.txt, canonical tags, redirects and structured data, and whether you can edit them or only accept defaults.
  • Performance-related features: CDN delivery, automatic image resizing and modern formats (WebP, AVIF), lazy loading and rendering approach. We report what vendors document, not how fast sites are.
  • Flexibility: custom code, CMS depth, APIs, developer tooling, and whether you can export the site.
  • Pricing basis: entry prices, whether they need annual or multi-year terms, and published renewal prices.

Webflow

What it is. Webflow is a visual site builder that exposes HTML and CSS concepts directly, with a built-in CMS, hosting, ecommerce and an AI assistant. Site plans are priced per site, separately from Workspace plans for collaboration.

SEO, performance and flexibility. Webflow’s plan comparison lists per-page meta titles and descriptions, alt text, Open Graph settings, canonical tags, sitemap controls, crawler access controls (including for AI bots), robots.txt and llms.txt, schema markup support and 301 redirects. Sites are served through a global CDN, and an image conversion tool turns JPEG and PNG assets into AVIF or WebP, replacing the originals. For developers, paid site plans allow custom code, Premium adds code components and site search, and Webflow Cloud can host apps alongside the site. Paid Workspace plans add code export of “clean, semantic HTML and CSS”, but CMS items and pages “can’t be exported”.

Best for. Designers and front-end developers who want CMS-driven sites with precise layout control. Our Webflow review for developers and designers goes deeper, and our list of Webflow alternatives at different budgets helps if the pricing model does not fit.

Notable limits. The CMS requires the Premium site plan; Basic is for sites without one. Collaboration, staging and code export sit on separate Workspace plans, so real costs combine two subscriptions.

Starting price. Free Starter plan on a webflow.io domain (2 static pages, 1 GB bandwidth). Basic is $15/month per site billed yearly ($25 monthly); Premium with CMS is $25/month billed yearly ($39 monthly), with 50 GB bandwidth and paid add-ons up to 2.5 TB. Prices exclude tax. See Webflow pricing

Framer

What it is. Framer is a design-first builder that publishes directly from a canvas, with a CMS, localization, analytics and an AI agent that edits pages, sections and copy inside your project.

SEO, performance and flexibility. Framer auto-generates a sitemap and robots.txt, lets you exclude pages from search, set canonical URLs and manage redirects, and lets you upload well-known files such as robots.txt or llms.txt. Structured data is added as JSON-LD through custom code. On performance, Framer converts most JPEG, PNG, WebP and GIF images to AVIF (with WebP fallback), generates resized variants and lazy-loads images further down the page. It runs on AWS with CloudFront delivery and pre-renders its most visited pages. The plan table lists 20 CDN locations on Basic and 300+ on Pro. Developers can add React code components, but Framer states it “does not offer HTML export for self-hosting”.

Best for. Startups, designers and marketers who want visually ambitious sites without front-end code. See our Framer review for the editor and CMS, and our guide to portfolio website builders if the site is mainly a showcase.

Notable limits. Pages, CMS collections, CMS items and bandwidth are capped per plan (Basic: 30 pages, 2 collections, 1,000 items, 50 GB), extra editors cost $20/month each, and there is no exit via export.

Starting price. Free plan on a Framer domain with 1 GB bandwidth. Basic is $10/month and Pro $30/month per site, shown with yearly billing selected. See Framer pricing

Wix

What it is. Wix is a hosted builder with three editors (the classic Wix Editor, the AI-first Wix Harmony launched in January 2026, and Wix Studio for agencies) and a large set of business apps for bookings, events and ecommerce.

SEO, performance and flexibility. In our assessment, Wix documents one of the longest lists of editable SEO settings among the hosted builders here: per-page and pattern-based meta tags, an editable robots.txt, a 301 redirect manager with bulk import, customizable canonical tags, structured-data presets you can modify or replace, and Google Search Console setup from the dashboard. Wix says its SEO infrastructure is based on server-side rendering and that images are compressed, resized and converted to WebP automatically. Developers get frontend and backend JavaScript, a managed Node.js backend, a CLI with GitHub integration and an MCP server for AI coding tools. Wix also states that sites “must run on Wix’s servers”; there is no export.

Best for. Small businesses that want to start free and grow into apps, bookings and custom code. Our Wix vs Squarespace comparison covers fees and editors in detail.

Notable limits. You cannot switch templates on an existing site, Harmony still lacks some apps (including the Wix CMS and Multilingual), and the Light plan cannot take payments.

Starting price. Free plan with Wix branding and no custom domain. Light is $17/month on a yearly subscription paid upfront (US list price, per Wix’s plans guide); Core, the first plan with payments, is $29/month. Prices exclude tax and vary by location. See Wix plans

Squarespace

What it is. Squarespace is a hosted builder built around designer templates, with built-in commerce, marketing tools and a set of AI tools including Blueprint AI and the Clarkson chat assistant.

SEO, performance and flexibility. Squarespace automates most SEO: it creates and updates the sitemap, generates structured data for blog posts, events, local businesses, organizations, products and websites (which you “can’t edit or remove”), and uses static, readable URLs. You write titles and SEO descriptions, and you can add 301 or 302 redirects in URL mappings. Images are delivered in seven widths and converted to WebP by default. Code options are modest: a CSS editor on every plan, with code injection, advanced code blocks and Commerce APIs from Core up. Export is limited to some content in WordPress XML format.

Best for. Creatives, service businesses and small shops that want a consistent, polished result with few decisions. Squarespace offers monthly billing on every plan.

Notable limits. No free plan, no editable robots.txt or structured data, a 2% store transaction fee on the Basic plan, and you cannot switch templates on version 7.1 sites.

Starting price. Basic is $19/month billed annually or $25 monthly; Core is $29 annually or $39 monthly. A 14-day free trial is available. US prices; Squarespace localizes pricing by region. See Squarespace pricing

Hostinger AI Builder (formerly Website Builder)

What it is. Hostinger AI Builder is the product Hostinger created in August 2026 by merging its drag-and-drop Website Builder with its Horizons vibe-coding tool; the drag-and-drop editor is now called Manual mode. Every plan also includes Agentic mode for prompt-built sites and web apps, plus hosting that can run WordPress.

SEO, performance and flexibility. The builder covers basics: meta titles, descriptions, URLs and keywords per page, hiding pages from search, an AI SEO assistant and automatic sitemaps. Its SEO guide does not mention redirects, robots.txt editing or structured data. Hostinger’s plan pages list a CDN on its website plans. Custom scripts can be added to the head or body. Manual-mode sites can export pages, text and images to WordPress, but not layouts, the store or SEO settings; Agentic mode can export a React and Vite codebase.

Best for. Simple sites on a tight budget, especially if you already host with Hostinger. Our Hostinger AI Builder review covers the details, and our Hostinger hosting review looks at the hosting side.

Notable limits. The advertised price requires a 48-month prepayment and renews about 3.7 times higher, SEO controls are basic, and an expired plan’s data is deleted.

Starting price. Premium is $2.99/month on a 48-month term ($143.52 upfront), renewing at $10.99/month, excluding VAT. A 14-day free trial is available. See Hostinger AI Builder plans

WordPress (self-hosted and WordPress.com)

What it is. WordPress is open-source CMS software. Self-hosted, it runs on any server meeting its requirements (WordPress.org recommends PHP 8.3+ and MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.11+). WordPress.com runs it as a managed service.

SEO, performance and flexibility. With WordPress, SEO and performance are not fixed by a vendor: they depend on your theme, plugins, caching and host. That is both the strength and the cost. You can control every tag, cache layer and redirect, but someone has to set them up and maintain them. In our assessment, flexibility and portability are greater than with any hosted builder here, because you can move the files and database to another host. On WordPress.com, plugins can be installed on every paid plan, and the Business and Commerce plans add SFTP/SSH, WP-CLI, Git commands and GitHub deployments.

Best for. Content-heavy sites, teams that want to own their stack, and developers who are comfortable maintaining PHP software. If you are weighing it against a visual builder, our Webflow vs WordPress comparison goes through the trade-offs.

Notable limits. Updates, security and backups are your responsibility unless your host or WordPress.com takes them on, and plugin quality varies widely.

Starting price. The software is free; hosting is extra. WordPress.com Personal is $4/month for the first year billed annually (renewing at $5/month) or $9 monthly; Business is $25/month for the first year billed annually (renewing at $28/month) or $40 monthly. Prices exclude tax. Get WordPress · Compare WordPress.com plans

How to choose

  • Decide how much you might need to leave. If an exit matters, WordPress is the safest, Webflow’s static export is a partial hedge, and Wix and Framer offer no export. Our guide to website builders vs WordPress vs custom code walks through this decision, including when a hand-coded site on a frontend host is the better answer; for those hosts, see our Vercel, Netlify and Cloudflare Pages comparison.
  • Match SEO control to your needs. If you need custom structured data, robots rules or large redirect sets, Wix, Webflow and WordPress document the most control. Squarespace’s automatic defaults suit simpler sites.
  • Be honest about who edits the site. In our assessment, non-technical editors tend to do well on Squarespace, Wix and Hostinger. Designers tend to prefer Webflow or Framer.
  • Price the whole term. Compare renewal prices and add-ons (Webflow Workspace plans, Framer editor seats, WordPress plugins) over the years you expect to run the site, not just the first invoice.
  • Treat AI as a starting point. Framer, Wix, Hostinger and others now generate first drafts from prompts; our roundup of AI website builders compares how they work. If you actually need logins and a database, an AI app builder such as Lovable may fit better than a website builder.

Bottom line

There is no single best website builder for developers, only the best fit for a given site. In our assessment, Webflow offers a strong mix of SEO control and developer-friendly structure, Framer is the design-led choice, Wix pairs a long list of editable SEO settings with a full developer platform for small business, Squarespace is the hands-off option, Hostinger is the budget bundle, and WordPress remains the choice when ownership and portability come first. Check the free plan or trial against the specific SEO and code features you need before you move content in.

FAQ

Which website builder produces the quickest-loading sites?

We cannot say from documentation alone, and we did not run benchmarks. All the hosted builders here document performance features such as CDN delivery and automatic modern image formats; real-world speed depends heavily on your design, images, scripts and third-party embeds.

Can I add my own code to a website builder?

Yes, to different degrees. Wix has a full JavaScript and Node.js developer platform, Webflow and Framer support custom code and code components, Squarespace allows CSS on all plans and code injection from Core, and Hostinger’s builder accepts head and body scripts.

Do I need a separate host for these builders?

No. Webflow, Framer, Wix, Squarespace and Hostinger include hosting. Only self-hosted WordPress (and custom code) needs you to choose a host.
